“I like being independent. It is important to have a job. I really like my coworkers and my bosses too.
When I get my check I save it. When my mom needs help with bills I help her. At the forum, I let my legislators know these things are important to me.” - LaShay Thomas, District 27 (Tacoma Washington) |
Historically, there have been significant barriers in place that have made it difficult for people born with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to meet with their legislators. As a result people born with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, commonly known as I/DD, have not had a chance to advocate or have a equal say in their local government. 25 years ago Pierce County decided to start hosting it's own legislative forum for pierce county residents to address this issue.
Traditionally hosted at Tacoma Community College the Pierce County Legislative Forum was created to give people with disabilities a space to meet with and speak directly to their legislators. Legislators from all pierce county districts attend year after year and are eager to hear from their constituents. The event is hosted by PAVE, Pierce County, Parent coalitions, community members, self advocates, and allies of the I/DD community. The planning committee is open to all residents. The goal for the event is to have an inclusive event so everyone has their voice heard. If you would like to join the planning committee or would like more info please CLICK HERE.
